IEEE ITSC 2026 Presenting my paper Dancing!

Highlights from my visit to Naples for IEEE ITSC 2026

On Thursday 17th September 2026 I presented the final chapter of my PhD research at the 29th IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference in Naples, Italy.

This was my first international conference and I met some great people and had many interesting conversations.

The organisers put on some fantastic tours of the sights of Naples, including a visit to the Royal Palace of Naples, a tour of the old town and a visit to the coast. Of course, being an Englishman, I had to go for a dip in the sea much to the consternation of the venue staff!

Many of the presentations focused on machine learning and machine vision which I do not have any particular expertise in, but it was very interesting to see what was going on in different areas. I particularly enjoyed the railway sessions and meeting other railway researchers and entrepreneurs.

I definitely realised that I tend to take more of a "big picture" view of things. My PhD research has definitely gone in this direction rather than focusing on a particular implementation or algorithm. While I can see myself putting some focus into the technical side of things in future I will continue to develop my broader whole-system thinking as I finish writing my thesis.
